The health benefits of coconut oil

Coconut oil has been criticized for its excessive amounts of saturated fat. Coconut oil contains more than 80 percent saturated fat. In one tablespoon of coconut oil, there are 12 grams of saturated fat and 14 grams of total fat.

In essence, this places coconut oil on a par with bacon grease, which has never been considered particularly heart-healthy.

According to extensive research, coconut oil increases low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels. This is the “bad” cholesterol that clogs arteries and contributes to cardiac problems.

A high cholesterol level increases the risk of heart disease. In order to lower your bad cholesterol, you should limit saturated fat consumption to less than 6.5% of your daily caloric intake. On a 1,820 calorie diet, that equates to 12 grams of saturated fat per day.

A single tablespoon of coconut oil would consume your entire daily allowance. This is not a good thing.

However, that message has somehow been lost when it comes to views on tropical oil. A public survey conducted a few years ago revealed that 74% of Americans considered coconut oil to be healthy.

Coconut oil does not contain a large amount of vitamins and minerals.

Making coconut oil involves the removal of virtually all of the nutrients found in the raw fruit. The food contains trace amounts of iron, zinc, vitamin K, vitamin E, and even calcium, but not enough to make a difference.

That is not much benefit from a food that contains 119 calories and 15 grams of fat per tablespoon.

Even though coconut oil contains high levels of saturated fats, there is some evidence that it can aid in weight loss. The reason involves medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which increase energy expenditure and calorie expenditure.

The effect is minimal, however, so do not expect miracles. The secret to a beach body does not lie in coconut oil. Moderation is still recommended.

Additionally, coconut oil can be used as a substitute for butter, lard, and beef tallow in a plant-based diet.

After you leave the kitchen, there are a few more benefits. You might see coconut oil being advertised on a variety of beauty aisle products because it is touted for hair and skin health.

Between coconut oil and butter, there is no clear winner when it comes to which is healthier. There is little difference between coconut oil and other saturated fats such as butter and palm oil, says Zumpano.

Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated oils are best for heart health, primarily extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). There have been several studies that demonstrate EVOO’s benefits for the heart.
